Say No to Demo – The Key Benefits of Recycling your home

A look at how we successfully re-purposed our client’s Coquitlam home.

In Metro Vancouver alone, more than 3,000 residential and commercial buildings are torn down every year. On average, one demolished home adds between 50 to 80 tonnes of building materials and waste to the landfill – or the equivalent of roughly 60 trees worth of lumber. Demolition is very costly for business and the environment.

At SC Morgan, we look first to eco-friendly options that keep building materials and homes out of the landfill. We encourage our clients to consider recycling or up-cycling older homes where possible instead of tearing them down. They are often surprised to hear this is also the more cost-friendly solution.

Original Coquitlam home prior to re-purposing

This past Spring we successfully re-purposed our client’s home in Coquitlam, British Columbia to facilitate a new custom build which is currently underway.

This home was the perfect candidate for recycling. It had been recently renovated and was in great condition. The original owner highlighted that it was important to them that someone else would be able to call it home. We listened.

In May of 2017 – with the assistance of our specialty contractor Nickel Brothers – the home was jacked up on large beams and blocks and removed without disruption in the middle of the night. Neighbours complimented the smooth removal process, most noting they didn’t even hear it being removed that evening. The home was then transported to a remote area in British Columbia for re-purposing where a new family now calls it home.

Home recycling is a win-win all around. Buyers are getting great value for quality recycled homes, builders and owners are saving on demolition and most importantly it is an eco-friendly solution that is sustainable for the environment. Keeping just one home out of the landfill is the equivalent to what one person could recycle in 100 years.
