5 luxury interior design trends for Fall 2017

By Teresa Ryback, Design Principal, tdSwansburg design studio

Each year the Pantone Institute announces a new “Colour of the Year” setting the tone for all new trends in the Interior Design industry. The 2017 colour is Greenery, selected to revitalize and unite, symbolizing a reconnection with nature. Here are the top 5 Fall 2017 design trends with suggestions of how you can incorporate these trends into your home.

1. Back to Nature

We have been embracing open concept floor plans for the past several years and “bringing the outdoors in” is not a new concept. However, incorporating this trend in new and exciting ways is the key. Botanical themed wallpapers, reclaimed wood furniture and a splash of greenery paint on an accent wall is a great way to add this trend. You may also want to consider a living wall in your Master Ensuite. Now that’s back to nature!

2. The Luxury of Velvet

This Fall velvet is making a resurgent. A luxurious and tactile fabric, it pairs well with natural textured wallpaper and reclaimed wood furniture. Velvet adds elegance and glamour to any space and richly toned tufted sofas, chairs and benches will find their way back into our interiors. Embrace the luxury by introducing a jewel toned velvet throw and accent cushions to your Master bedroom.

3. More Texture

Wallpaper has become one of the largest design trends and this continues into Fall 2017. Wallpaper is now available in large format designs, metallic 3–D and cork options. Texture can also be added with wall panels and tile formats that can be applied to vertical surfaces. If you are reluctant to commit to a full room, consider an accent wall.

4. Metal Mixing

Mixing metals is a trend that should be coordinated by a design professional to create the unexpected. In 2017 matte finishes have offset high shine. Brass and gold are still fashionable and matte black will start making its way into our homes in the form of plumbing and lighting. Changing fixtures or adding accessories is an easy, inexpensive way to update any space.

5. It’s all about Drama

In additional to Pantone’s “Colour of the Year” Greenery which is a bright refreshing green, many of the paint brands introduced their own 2017/18 colour palettes, showcasing dark, moody shades. The new neutrals of 2017 are much warmer and create a beautiful backdrop for you to introduce the richer, darker hues. This trend can be introduced in accent cushions or coloured glass.

Less is more when introducing new trends. Have fun with the Fall 2017 design trends!
